It's a Matter of Choice

For some reason, some people have equated Pro-Choice with Pro-Abortion. Let me state unequivacably that nothing could be further from the truth. Pro- Choice means just what it says. It is for the pregnant woman to choose whether or not she wants to be pregnant for 9 months, have a child and care for that child for at least the next 18 years. It is to allow the choice to be up to the woman, not her neighbors or the government to decide what happens to her body. What could possibly give the neighbors or the government the audacity to think they should have the right to be able to dictate such a personal and improtant decision for another person?

First let's get one thing cleared up. An embryo is not a baby. It is a potential baby, in the same way that an egg is not a chicken but a potential chicken. It is the result of the fertilization of a female ovum (egg cell) by a male sperm and for the first eight weeks, it is a continuous division of those joined cells which will form a fetus, which again, is still not a baby. A miracle, yes. A baby, no. It is dependent upon the mother's blood supply to nourish it through the umbilical cord. Technically speaking, at this stage it is a parasite, feeding off the host and unable to sustain life on its own.

There are many reasons why a woman would choose to interrupt a pregnancy without allowing it to come to term, without allowing it to become a baby, able to live outside of the mother's body. Many have financial reasons, some because the pregnancy was the result of incest or rape, some for genetic reasons, and some because of the maturity level of the pregnant female. Abstinence is given by Pro-Lifers as an alternative, however many woman who choose to interrupt a pregnancy are married. Whatever the reason is, it is between the woman and her conscience.

It is a remnant of America's Puritan heritage that says the purpose of sex is for procreation that makes abortion such a volatile issue. However, humans are one of the few species that has sex for pleasure at any time rather than just during mating season. For those who object citing religious reasons, one would expect they would have faith in the Creator's ability not to have made this distinction if the sole purpose of sex was to produce offspring.

It is a rare person who thinks abortion should be a usual method of contraception. That's foolish. Equally foolish is to think that a married couple who feel they are not suited to parenthood at that time either abstain from sex until ready or to always use contraception. Sex is an _expression of love that fosters the closeness two people need to maintain a good, solid relationship. It promotes "family values" and a husband and wife are very definitely a family, with or without children.

Contraception methods vary and are not always 100% successful.
Besides, there is something to be said for spontaneity. Is it better to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term and give birth to an unwanted shild? Is it better for a child to be born who is resented, neglected or abused? It is interesting to note that those people who are the most against abortion as a choice are also against welfare assistance to single mothers or any other aid to finance this child for 18 years. These are also the same people who want less government involvement and yet they want the government to involve itself in determining the most private and personal decision in our life.

To force a woman to have a child she does not want or is not prepared to care for is to relegate her importance to no more than that of a brood mare. To take away her legal choice is to force her to turn once again to the alleys and backrooms and clothes-hangar abortions to have the rights and power to make the determination over what happens to her own body.

By giving the government the power to dictate decisions over what is or isn't done to our bodies gives them the power to force unproven immunizations on us, such as those suspected in the sudden increase in cases of autism, or suspected in the mysterious deaths of some of our troops in Iraq. It is to give the government the power for selective sterilization of specific sectors of our population. It is to give the government the power to force us to allow implants to track and control every American. It starts with the first right we give up to have dominion over our own bodies. It starts with giving up our freedom of choice. We were all given free will by our Creator. Allowing the government to take that away and impose its will, would seems the greater sin.
