The other day I wrote that “Obama has surprised me more than once. I’ll count him out, he’ll ‘win’, and I’ll realize that he just made another masterful chess move. As I said, I sincerely hope I’m wrong about a bill either not getting through congress or getting through so full of insurance industry pork as to accelerate the demise of the country.”
Tonight I wrote “I was a Dean supporter in 2004 … (he) was a good choice for America.”
I’d seen Dr. Dean on a couple of talk shows, so when I saw a blog post on him “schooling” Mourning Joe Scarborough I read it. That led me to watch a few YouTube videos. I caught him on Kieth. I continue to believe that Dr. Dean is one of the best things to happen (to? for?) progressives in recent memory.
I’m wondering if I haven’t been snookered by Obama, again.

Texas public schools required to teach Bible this year
WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) – The school year is almost here, and if literature of the Bible is not already offered in your child’s school, it will be this fall.
Books are a common sight in classrooms around the nation, but the Bible is one book that is not. Come this fall, a Texas law says all public schools must offer information relating to the Bible in their curriculum.
“By the end of the year, what they begin to realize is that it is pervasive. You can’t get away from it. The kids came back and were like ‘It’s everywhere,’” said John Keeling, the social studies chair at Whitehouse High School. Whitehouse already offers a Bible elective. “The purpose of a course like this isn’t even really to get kids to believe it, per se, it is just to appreciate the profound impact that it has had on our history and on our government.”
The law actually passed in 2007, but this will be the first school year it is enforced because the bill says, “The provisions of this act pertaining to a school district do not take effect until the 2009-2010 school year.” Read the rest of this entry »

…and watching with interest.
…there aren’t enough votes for a health care bill without a public option in the House
There are 435 seats on the House. Of those, 257 are filled by Democrats and 178 by Republicans. Which means a majority is 218. The Republicans have vowed to vote against health care, period. The Democrats can pass health care on their own, but if they lose 40 of their own, they only have 217 votes.
There are 57 Democrats who signed the July 30 letter saying that they “simply cannot vote” for a bill that “at minimum” does not have a public plan. There are 7 more not listed on the letter who have pledged to vote against any bill that does not have a robust public plan. That makes 64 Democrats who won’t vote for the “co-ops” that both Kathleen Sibelius and Robert Gibbs say the White House is “open” to.
Do the math: 257 – 64 = 193. They need 218 to pass the bill.
