Why aren’t you asking “Why is Eric Cantor negotiating ‘fixing’ the economy at the same time he’s betting against America?

He’s the GOP’s chief debt ceiling negotiator. He’s also invested in a fund that will skyrocket if there’s a default.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday that any deficit reduction deal with Republicans has to include ending some tax breaks for the wealthy, and he urged lawmakers of both parties to “stay here until we get it done.”

“You can’t reduce the deficit to the levels that it needs to be reduced without having some revenue in the mix,” a feisty, sometimes defensive Obama said at his first formal news conference since March. “And the revenue we’re talking about isn’t coming out of the pockets of middle-class families that are struggling,” he explained. “It’s coming out of folks who are doing extraordinarily well … ” Obama had a message for those people: “You’ll still be able to ride on your corporate jet. You’re just going to pay a little more.”

Two Fort Leavenworth soldiers accused of robbing KU students at gunpoint

By George Diepenbrock, June 24, 2011

Douglas County prosecutors have filed several charges, including counts of aggravated robbery, against two Fort Leavenworth soldiers accused of robbing two Kansas University students at gunpoint on campus early Thursday morning.

Prosecutors filed two counts of aggravated robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of aggravated intimidation of a victim against Brandon James Huggins, 23, and Michael Martin Gerald, 21. Both men are scheduled to appear before a judge at 3:30 p.m. Friday to get bond set in the case.

KU officials said two male students reported they were approached by two men, both of whom were armed with a gun, behind Snow Hall at 1:45 a.m. Thursday. The suspects took property from the victims before leaving the scene, but Lawrence police found the two suspects 20 minutes later.

KU Public Safety officers then interviewed Huggins and Gerald before arresting them. A Fort Leavenworth spokeswoman has said both men are soldiers stationed at the U.S. Army post.

Republicans leave budget talks, blame Democrats

Republicans pulled out of debt-reduction talks led by Vice President Joe Biden with a flourish on Thursday, blaming Democrats for demanding tax increases as part of a deal rather than accepting more than $1 trillion in cuts to health care for the elderly and other government programs.

“Let me be clear: Tax hikes are off the table,” said the Republican leader of the House, Speaker John Boehner.

“I would point that the president supports a balanced approach,” Carney said. “He does not support an approach that provides for a $200,000 tax cut for millionaires and billionaires paid for by a $6,000 a year hike in expenses and costs for seniors.”
