I haven’t been posting because of a toothache I’ve had since Saturday. It goes from a dull, throbbing, background pain to the center of my attention.
Sunday, I took 2 advil at noon. By 2PM I was feeling OK, so I drove back to DC, deciding that if the pain came back I’d find a local dentist. It came back, and I found one a block from my apartment.
I made my 1:30 appointment, and after swishing one of those mirrors on a stick around the tooth for 20 seconds my new dentist announced the tooth was unsalvageable and would have to be pulled. I’d been in pain for 2 days, including several hours Sunday night walking all over the city looking for clove oil, so I said “let’s do this”.
He shot me up with Novocaine and left me alone while it went to work. As I sat there I started to think about spending the rest of my life as a gap-toothed person. When he came back in to extract the tooth I told him I was having second thoughts and wanted to get a second opinion. THEN, he took an X-ray, and put a temporary filling on it.
We went over the X-ray together and he explained how a root canal and cap could work, but I had an abscess.
I went to my regular dentist at home, today. The FIRST thing they did was take their own X-ray. When the assistant brought my regular dentist into the room he took one look at the picture and said “you need a root canal!”
I go in, at 8 in the morning, for a root canal. At 2PM I’ll go in and have the cap/crown placed. Then I’ll drive back to DC and go to work on Thursday, sans gap from the missing tooth, and, since the nerve will have been removed and fed to the shredder, without pain.
I called my boss once I knew the details, and his only concern, after expressing EXTREME sympathy for what I was going through, was that I had enough leave time to cover it. I do, and then I told him I was “looking forward to a root canal”. He said “I doubt that”, but once I pointed out that the pain would be over, then, he thought he could see my point. God, I love being in a union!
So, anyway, the only thing that could possibly annoy me more than this pain I’ve been in for the last 4 days is the malicious (Naderesque) lie that “there’s not a dime’s worth of difference” between the two parties, so I’ve stayed away, lest I get nasty.
I expect to be back at full fighting strength by 3PM Thursday.
If you think that there’s “no difference between Democrats and Republicans” you’d best step off an fear me. If I can put up with this kind of pain for 4 days, I can certainly beat down your pitiful, paranoid, deluded fantasies without needing to take a deep breath.
Seriously, I’m in pain right now, and it’s not going to end before morning. Test me. I’m up to it.

Update: Deleted the insane rambling portion because I wasn’t really thinking clearly when I wrote it. I now have a new crown in my mouth and am relatively pain free.
