Zbigniew: The Jerk may well be right this time.

Brzezinski: “We Don’t Need to Go to War”

Feb. 27, 2012
By Chris Frates
National Journal
WASHINGTON — Former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, who served under President Carter, said the United States has to make clear to Israel that an Israeli attack on Iran is not in U.S. interests (see GSN, Feb. 24).

“We don’t need to go to war,” he said in an interview on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, according to a transcript. “And we have to make that very clear to our Israeli friends. We’re not going to go to war. They’re not going to go to war by flying over our airspace over Iraq. We’re not going to support them. If they do it, they will be on their own. The consequences will be theirs, because the price we’ll all pay if they start a massive war, which the Iranians interpret as being done with our connivance, will be disastrous for us in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in the terms of oil, stability in the Middle East more generally.”

Zbigniew is another CFR arsehole, a “realpolitik” kinda a guy. But like an analog clock, he can be right 2 times a day.

War is the last resort, only to be taken in REAL self-defense (and not in defense of “national interests” or in a disproportionate sense such as our idiotic invasion of Afghanistan).

Our problem with Iran is similar to our’s with Iraq – it’s the oil, stupid.

When has he ever been right? Is he right about “our” airspace over Iraq? Can I get a second opinion from the Iraqis on our possession of Iraqi airspace?

His claims that “we won’t be bombing Iran” fly in the face of Obama’s statements that he is willing to do so if necessary. Who is the president again?

in a disproportionate sense such as our idiotic invasion of Afghanistan

Hardly disproportionate. They massacred 3,000 American civilians on American soil. We would have been justified in nuking all their population centers.

Our problem with Iran is similar to our’s with Iraq – it’s the oil, stupid.

Not at all. Our problem is their illegal nuclear weapons program.

I notice the phrase: “our airspace over Iraq”. I wonder if Mr. Brzezinski could elaborate on that, and if maybe we could run that by the Iraqi people for a second opinion.

I also noticed this part: “We don’t need to go to war. And we have to make that very clear to our Israeli friends. We’re not going to go to war.”

Has Brzezinski launched a coup and taken over the US government? Because last I knew, Obama said that he was resolved to make sure Iran did not develop nukes, and that he was not taking military options off the table.

Now I’m sure Obama and Israel have a difference of opinion over when it will be time to bomb Iran, but that does not mean that Obama is not willing to go to war.

        Because the NPT forbids it.

Also because Iran are the bad guys. Letting Iran have nukes would be a lot like letting bank robbers have machine guns.

But mainly because the NPT forbids it.

Yet Israel ownership of nukes was never cleared by anyone either and would have been forbidden if they had not gotten those nukes with dubious circumstances.

Does anyone know where those nukes illegally flown across the country were headed? Mainstream media never once covered that strongly important question. I suspect they were flying to Israel, … illegally!!

I call for USA sanctions on Israel, especially those sanctions for defense contracts and arms.

No, no one has any authority to forbid Israel from having nuclear weapons.

Does anyone know where those nukes illegally flown across the country were headed?

Yes. To that Air Force base in the south. I named it for you before, but I don’t remember the name.

            It wasn’t exactly illegal.

That is just flat out silly. Of course, Israel would have to have had UN approval for ownership of nukes. They knew, because they have few friends (mostly because the State of Israel are not good friends to have) in the UN, that they would have to nuke-arm via very dubious practices. And Israel is willing to use dubious practices. IF Israel doesn’t have to clear their nukes with the rest of the world, why should Iran do it?

If you are satisfied by the answer “To that Air Force base in the south.”, then why are you here on this board? All you have to do is accept the official story, and indeed you have. I have not. I know we get lied to left and right from a government that is supposed to answer to The People. I find it pretty shallow thinking to not take an incidence into it’s intended but thwarted fruition.

Pollard! Larry Franklin in the upper levels of the DOD, during 9-11, during the march to illegally invade Iraq. And far more spies that I am sure they will not relate to us. And you know that those damaging spies are mostly IN our government agencies, while those same government agencies are repressing The People due to spies and terrorism. That in itself is a pretty powerful statement.

“On August 27, 2004, CBS News broke a story about an FBI investigation into a possible spy in the U.S. Department of Defense working for Israel. The story reported that the FBI had uncovered a spy working as a policy analyst under Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith and then-Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz. He was later identified as Lawrence Franklin, who had previously served as an attaché at the U.S. embassy in Israel and was one of two mid-level Pentagon officials in the Office of the Secretary of Defense

responsible for Iran policy in the office’s Northern Gulf directorate.

                [2][3][4]
Franklin has pled guilty to passing on a classified presidential directive, and other sensitive documents pertaining to U.S. deliberations on foreign policy regarding Iran to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, who in turn provided the information to Israel. FBI sources have indicated that the year-long investigation was actively underway when the CBS News story broke.
According to FBI surveillance tapes, Franklin relayed top-secret information to Rosen and Keith Weissman, a senior Iran analyst with AIPAC, while at the Tivoli Restaurant in Arlington, Virginia. On 27 August, the FBI raided Rosen’s office, copying his personal computer’s hard drive.[5]”

The “second pillar” of the NPT is disamament. Thus all nuclear powers have already taken down one of the pillars of the NPT, which is in effect, a PR document more than anything else.

From the Iranian (and other’s) POV, the NPT could be considerd an “odious obligation”.

The US’ military and intelligence organizations aren’t convinced that Iran’s nuclear program is actually directed towards making nukes. I wouldn’t mind Iran having nukes – it would make war less likely in the region. But what’s really happening is a rhetoric similar to the pre-Iraq invasion. And lots of people fall for it, the usual fear mongering.

At any rate, the NPT’s Article X allows a country to abandon it. Iran could do so, but hasn’t.

The reality is that we have the usual fight between the have’s and the have-nots, and in this case it has to do with the weapons required to impose dominance.

The US and Russia have engaged in massive disarmament in recent decades.

If Iran is allowed to build nukes, however, it will mean the end of the NPT and the spread of nukes around the world.

The US would have to react to that by building our arsenal back up to Cold War levels, and also resuming nuclear tests and designing better warheads.

We’d also want to share our advanced warhead designs with our allies, so they are better able to cope with such a world. Israel in particular would gain quite a leap from moving to atomic warheads to our most advanced thermonuclear warheads. And many of China and Russia’s neighbors would benefit from our warhead designs too (in particular, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Poland, and Georgia).

From the Iranian (and other’s) POV, the NPT could be considerd an “odious obligation”.

Bank robbers think the same of laws that allow police to carry guns but not felons.

The US’ military and intelligence organizations aren’t convinced that Iran’s nuclear program is actually directed towards making nukes.

Not exactly. They note that Iran is not manufacturing components and assembling them into working devices. And that is true.

But Iran is working as hard as they can towards building the capability to do so, in particular the capability to produce fissile material. And 99% of the difficulty in making a nuke is being able to produce the fissile material.

I wouldn’t mind Iran having nukes

Do you also mind a world where the US resumes nuclear testing and freely shares all our warhead designs with Israel and other allies?

Because if the NPT isn’t going to be binding on Iran, it isn’t going to be binding on the US either.

it would make war less likely in the region.

That would be a bad thing. Iran would become even more of a troublemaker than they already are, and use their nuclear deterrent to prevent the west from intervening.

At any rate, the NPT’s Article X allows a country to abandon it. Iran could do so, but hasn’t.

A country is only allowed to withdraw for a good reason.

“I’m a rogue nation and I want nuclear weapons” doesn’t qualify as a good reason.

In addition, even if Iran were able to legitimately withdraw, their nuclear weapons program would only be legal if they started it after withdrawing. Iran has been running their nuclear weapons program for decades, and they cannot now legitimize an already illegal program by simply withdrawing from the NPT.

Israeli Defenses Inadequate For Beating Missile Onslaught, Lawmaker Says

    Feb. 28, 2012
Only three-fourths of Israel’s population has access to strengthened structures that would provide protection from missile strikes, a senior lawmaker told Reuters in a Monday rebuke of the government’s efforts to prepare for a possible assault by Iran (see GSN, Nov. 3, 2011).

Close to 25 percent Israeli citizens do not live near either residential bomb shelters or reinforced community bunkers, said Zeev Bielski who leads the Knesset’s home defense preparations panel.

“Are we prepared for a war? No,” said the lawmaker from the opposition Kadima party. “Thing are moving too slowly and we are wasting very precious time.”

The Civil Defense Ministry verified Bielski’s statistics on civilian access to bomb shelters. (snip)

Jerusalem believes that some 100,000 missiles and rockets are targeting Israel.
    —————–
By gods, it is so obvious. There are reasons why there are missiles and rockets targeting Israel. They are supposed to love their neighbor as themselves, but … they just cannot seem to get that honorable commandment down and practiced. Israel is such a cranky country.

But before I argue an issue, I make damned sure that I have tried to step in the other man’s shoes – because I reserve the right to be wrong. And after I do so, I look towars what would be the best solution for all involved before I look to see what could be the best outcome for ME.

If so, the outcome is easy. I reject my Palestinian indoctrination, and I see that Israel is no threat and are merely defending themselves.

If I speak the truth, my neighbors will cut off my head, so I probably do not speak out.

If I reject a source, it is likely because the source contradicts reality.

The best solution for all involved would be a negotiated peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

Punishing Israel for the fact that the Palestinians refuse to negotiate is not a path to a successful peace deal. The Palestinians merely keep refusing to negotiate, and it generates enormous ill will towards negotiations among the Israelis.

A majority of Americans do not want Israel to attack Iranian nuclear facilities, and believe that Iran could rebuild its nuclear program in less than five years if it were attacked, according to a new University of Maryland poll.
    —————-

What I see is that Israel doesn’t have any interest in protecting their people. Instead of placing shields for the people living in israal, they just want to buy more missiles. Doesn’t make any sense not to protect their people if they are so concerned about their people.

But we know, by the Mossad’s own admissions, that they havae bombed thier own to further an agenda. So of course, it comes as no surprise that Israel is not concerned about their own people.

►►Ex-Mossad chief says Iran’s response to attack would be devastating. An Israeli attack on Iran would lead to a missile attack on Tel Aviv that would have a “devastating impact” on the ability of Israelis to continue their daily lives, Meir Dagan, former head of Israel’s spy agency Mossad, said on Monday. Dagan said that Iran doesn’t have only four nuclear sites, but it has “dozens” of them. He seemed quite skeptic over the effectiveness of an Israeli attack on Iran, saying that no military attack could halt the Iranian nuclear project. “The attack could only delay it”, he said.

Having a few ballistic missiles fired at them is an inconvenience they’ve weathered many times before. “Devastating” is overblown.

While it is true that there are a lot of minor Iranian nuclear sites, there are still four key ones. In any case, the US will likely be the ones to do the bombing, and we have more than enough to hit all their sites.

And a simple yearly re-bombardment of Iran would prevent them from ever successfully rebuilding.

That might be due to their neighbors’ incessant efforts to murder Israeli children.

So why should their neighbors love them?

The reason they *should* do so is because it is the right thing to do. Israel’s neighbors are mostly bad people though, so slim chances of that ever happening.

I’ve seen lots of similar stories. What’s clear is that Israel is one fucked up country.

The demise of Israel’s Labour Party – and it’s Western-style acquiescence to “centrism” has left the doors wide open to rw manipulation.

I’m in touch with some lw Israelis who are pissed off to hell about what’s happening over there. Manipulated news, jingoism, fear-mongering… which eventually reaches the US through IPAC.

It’s not so bad. The Israeli military does a decent job of keeping everyone safe.

Do you remember why the Labor Party suffered a catastrophic collapse?

(They are “down, but not out” BTW. Though they won’t return to power until Israel’s neighbors are willing to make peace, if that ever happens.)

I’m in touch with some lw Israelis who are pissed off to hell about what’s happening over there.

Do they recognize that the reason it is happening is because Israel’s neighbors refuse to stop attacking Israel?

    “It’s not so bad.”

You’ve been there? I have. Believe me, it’s one fucked up country.

“Do you remember why the Labor Party suffered a catastrophic collapse?”

Sure. It’s leader was murdered by a batshit crazy conservative.

“Do they recognize that the reason it is happening is because Israel’s neighbors refuse to stop attacking Israel?”

    That’s a red herring.

Forgot to reply to this part before.

The plan is to keep bombing Iran as they try to rebuild.

Sure. It’s leader was murdered by a batshit crazy conservative.

The Labor Party survived that. Labor fell from power because they tried to negotiate peace in 2000-2001, and the Palestinians responded to the peace negotiations by sending wave after wave of suicide bombers to murder Israeli civilians (children if they could manage it) until the Israeli voters got so sick of being massacred that they kicked Labor out of power and elected Ariel Sharon.

Labor will return to power if the Israeli voters ever see that their neighbors are finally willing to make peace, but probably not a day sooner.

      That’s a red herring.

No, the reason the right currently has so much power is directly tied to the fact that Israel’s neighbors refuse to make peace.

The Israeli voters aren’t fools. They want peace, but they are not going to elect a peacemaker when there is no peace to be had.

I’ve known that all along. Note your earlier comment about me rejecting some sources automatically. I reject them because they are contrary to reality.

No, I reject sources that contradict reality. It is that very same “filtering out of propaganda” that you were recommending to me a few posts up.

I’ve never rejected a source without a good reason.

“Israelies don’t buy things they do not intend to use.”

We sold more than 200 bunker-busters to Israel two years ago. They had to reconfigure F-15s to carry those bunker busters. Those bombs are mounted, ready to go, and they will be used.

Bunker-busters are NOT defensive weapons, Or! I am aghast at your blind thoughts on Israel.

Gods Damm the state of Israel and it’s war-mongering!! I will be doing the ether-work that tries to stop this. AND I will again call my Congressmen on the bad, bad Israel.

I have no doubt at all that that is where those illegally-flying nukes were going when, armed, they crossed our country. They were either going to be used by some power-mongering faction within this country ON this country. OR they were going to Israel.

Israel’s national government is suffering from figurative Tay Sachs, demented and literally seeing red!:
As the disease progresses, other symptoms may also occur, including:

    Seizures
Increased startle reflex to noise (of course!)
Vision loss (it appears this is true)
Hearing loss (this is an absolute!)
Inability to swallow (yeppers, they got the disease)
Mental retardation (No doubt about it!)
    Paralysis (need say no more)
    Dementia. (already there!)

An eye abnormality called a cherry-red spot, which can be identified with an eye examination, is one of the characteristic symptoms of Tay-Sachs disease.

We sold more than 200 bunker-busters to Israel two years ago.

We don’t actually “sell” weapons to Israel. They get the weapons for free.

But yes. Obama wanted a 10-month freeze on settlement construction, and Israel refused to comply unless they were given a supply of 5,000-pound bunker busters.

They had to reconfigure F-15s to carry those bunker busters.

      Such reconfiguration is easily done.

Those bombs are mounted, ready to go, and they will be used.

Perhaps. But I think probably Obama and Netanyahu reached an understanding, where Israel would agree not to do the bombing now, and in exchange Obama would later conduct a much more extensive bombardment of Iran using the US Air Force.

Bunker-busters are NOT defensive weapons, Or! I am aghast at your blind thoughts on Israel.

Something needs to be done about Iran’s nuclear program.

Gods Damm the state of Israel and it’s war-mongering!!

Again, something needs to be done about Iran’s nuclear program.

I will be doing the ether-work that tries to stop this.

Just don’t go to Iran as a human shield or something. The collateral damage from this bombardment will be a lot worse than you imagine. The clouds of toxic and acidic gas that’ll be drifting across the countryside after the nuclear plants are blown up will make things pretty grim for anyone who happens to be downwind.

AND I will again call my Congressmen on the bad, bad Israel.

They aren’t bad. This is something that has to be done.

I have no doubt at all that that is where those illegally-flying nukes were going when, armed, they crossed our country. They were either going to be used by some power-mongering faction within this country ON this country. OR they were going to Israel.

It was hardly illegal. They were flying to a missile disassembly facility.

I will never accept something that is clearly untrue.

The wall in Israel is going to be the new border once Israel loses patience and annexes everything west of it.
