With Friends Like These...

For months, there has been speculation about where the Bush war machine would strike next. Even though North Korea has admitted to having a nuclear weapons program and has the capability of delivering "the big kaboom" to California, my money was always on either Syria or Iran since we already have men and equipment right there in the Middle East from our Iraq invasion.

It would appear that the speculation is over. Israeli officials have warned that it is considering unilateral action against Iran to destroy, what it suspects, is Teheran's nuclear weapons program. If Iran was enriching uranium from its nuclear power plants to be used for weapons, it would be in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It's strange that Israel would cite the treaty since Israel wouldn't sign the treaty. What isn't strange is that Israel would announce an intention of a pre-emptive strike on another nation because of the suspicion of that nation being in possession of WMD. After all, we wrote the script. We are the modern role models for staging attacks on other nations. We've even publicly declared our intent and our right to invade, in our 2002 "National Security Strategy of the United States of America" on the White House website. That document states, "We must be prepared to stop rogue states and their terrorist clients before they are able to threaten or use weapons of mass destruction against the United States and our allies and friends." It warns other countries, not to pursue "a military build-up in hopes of surpassing, or equaling, the power of the United States." While on the other hand, "It is time to reaffirm the essential role of American military strength. We must build and maintain our defenses beyond challenge." Since we've made Israel the fourth leading nuclear power in the world, it's equipped to play the US role.

Attacking nations before they are able to threaten us. What a concept! It's like "Do unto others, but do it to them first." If there's no threat, I wonder what method is used to decide what nation to attack. I suppose one could blindfold Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and have him throw darts at a big wall map. Or put the blindfold on Vice President Cheney, spin a big globe and have him stop it with his finger. The drawback to both of those plans is that a dart or a finger could land in the ocean. Probably the fairest way would be to write the name of each country on a piece of paper, put all the names in a hat and have a drawing. The choice of Iran as the attack-ee was easy since we didn't have to make it. Israel did.

Israel has been pushing for the US to rid them of their enemy, Iran, after we took out Iraq. The Bush administration seems to be complying in an act of deja vu. John Bolton, Department of State undersecretary has announced that in, "the aftermath of Iraq, dealing with the Iranian nuclear weapons program will be of equal importance."

Iran is denying having a nuclear weapons program, yet surprisingly they are willing to cooperate with inspections from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It's surprising because the motivation to cooperate was made less compelling when the world saw how much good it did Saddam. It would seem that once the accusation is made the die is cast.

The danger here, of course, is that one of these days, one of our targets really will have WMD and decide that if it's going to go down it might as well go down in a blaze of glory and get in the first licks.

Richard Perle, the Zionist advisor to both Israel and the United States, former head and now member of the Defense Policy Board, is advocating the installation of a US-Israel friendly government in Iran. It is his opinion that the solution to the problem would be to "liberate the Iranian people." We all know what that euphemism means. The only question that remains is, will it be Bush or Sharon who gets to push the button first?
