Kerry Hits Home Run
Bush Out With Three Strikes
Those who watched the baseball game instead of the third and
final presidential debate missed seeing John Kerry hit a homer that sailed over
the fence and out of the park with a vision and a plan for the future. George
Bush fouled a couple of times and struck out.
Bush took a wild swing and a miss when countering Kerry's claim that the
president said he wasn't concerned about Osama bin Laden. Bush said he didn't
recall ever saying that, calling it an "egg-za-geration". The fact check umpires
called the out recalling Bush's unforgettable March 13, 2002 statement, "I don't
know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that
important. It's not our priority." Maybe Bush couldn't recall it but it was
etched in the minds of many Americans who focused our collective anger on bin
Laden, the man Bush told us was responsible for the attacks on 9-11.
It was a definite foul when Bush spat out "liberal" and "Massachusetts" like
they were dirty words. While this gets cheered when addressing his home park
supporters in his stump speeches, it brought boos from the national bleachers by
alienating the northeast and half the electorate.
Bush took a another swing at Kerry's record in the Senate to a question on
health care saying only five of the Senator's bills were passed. It was caught
when Kerry countered with the fact that 56 of his bills were passed and he "was
one of the original authors of early childhood health care and the expansion of
health care." The president looked shocked and probably berated his coach
afterwards for leaving him open to that out.
Bush hit another foul that went wide off the topic of jobs and landed on
education instead.
The final out came when the president failed to present any reasonable plan to
change the problems we face. He tried to bunt, saying we still have more work to
do and he wanted to finish it. Kerry easily fielded it with explanations of his
plans and the ways intended to achieve them.
The highpoint of the debate came in the last question when Kerry told of his
mother's words to him from a hospital bed. When he told her of his plans to run
for president, she told him to remember three things: "Integrity, integrity,
integrity."
