Saddam's Capture
There is a photo making the rounds of the web that shows an
aerial shot of our troops in Iraq standing in a way to form letters spelling
"9-11 We Remember". They may remember 9-11 but they either forgot or didn't know
that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. They just as well could have spelled
"Remember the Alamo". It had the same connection to 9-11 as Iraq had. These are
our troops who are fighting and dying and they don't even know why!
That the capture of Saddam seems to validate the invasion, is a testament to how
thoroughly the administration's propaganda has permeated the American, and
perhaps the world's, psyche. That dirty, disoriented old man living in a cramped
hole in the ground was never a threat to the US and was certainly not directing
the Iraqi resistance to our unwarranted attack, invasion and occupation of their
country. Congress didn't give approval for a pre-emptive strike for regime
change, nor was American support for the war for this reason. It has no effect
on the security of our country as evidenced by the fact that a week after
Saddam's capture our national threat level was raised to orange by Tom Ridge,
Director of Homeland Security, unless it is to make us less
secure by angering Muslims for humiliating yet another Islamic by our televising
of our "prize." Wasn't that the behavior that so outraged us when several of our
captured troops were shown on Al Jazeera television? We continually are showing
the world that America is the nation of the double standard.
The Iraqi people feel no more secure. At least when Saddam was in power the
people knew how to avoid his terror. They knew what he expected of them. Now,
they have no idea when our troops will burst into their homes, prodding them
outside at the end of their rifles, shouting at them in a language they don't
understand. They don't know when a plane will shoot a rocket into their home or
destroy the grove in which they work because they suspect someone of sabotage.
They wonder if their village will be next to be wrapped in razor wire. It is a
strange kind of freedom we bring when they can leave their village only by
passing through a small opening guarded by men with guns who check their ID, and
search their vehicles. Tanks and rubble and soldiers are all around. There are
checkpoints and curfews, but they are told they are liberated. Will this change
with the capture of Saddam?
Saddam Hussein will be well cared for and shown on the TV occasionally so the
world can see he is well cared for, but before he is put in front of a
microphone at any trial he will quietly pass away one night (with the help of
some injectable). He has already said the WMD were a fantasy in the mind of
George Bush used as an excuse to attack them. He has too much of a past with the
administrations of Reagan and the first George Bush, which were almost the same
as this administration. He knows the secrets which would prove an embarrassment
if they were revealed in a world court. This George Bush sealed the records of
those past administrations in an attempt to hide the fact that America is a
nation of double standards and deceit. Saddam would never be allowed to prove
that America arranged for shipments of materials that could be used on Iranian
troops after two years of reciting the mantra, "he gassed his own people". He
knows the names of the companies he dealt with in the 80s that were paid with
money from loans arranged by America. At the time we didn't mind what weapons he
used as long as Iran was defeated, because it served our purpose. No American
journalist is showing the documents already in the public domain from the
Iran-Contra congressional hearings and the Freedom of Information Act, before
the records were sealed. The media is cooperating with this administration in
its attempt to hide the truth. They think that the American people won't
remember events from twenty years ago. Many Americans obviously can't even
remember that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9-11, and that was only two
years ago.
The main purpose that will be served by the capture of Saddam Hussein is not the
security of the American people. It is not the security of the Iraqi people. It
is the security of the officials and advisors in this administration and the
administrations of Reagan and the first George Bush and those companies who
collaborated with them because it ensures Saddam's silence. There is no way that
Saddam Hussein will be given an open forum in court which would air America's
dirty laundry for all the world to see.
